"I both wished and feared to see Mr. Rochester on the day which followed this sleepless night: I wanted to hear his voice again, yet feared to meet his eye" (155).
The classic musical, The Sound of Music, shares many connections with Jane Eyre especially in the character Maria, the new governess of the Von Trapp Family. The single father hires her to teach his children, while he ends up falling in love with his new employee. When Jane becomes a governess at Thornfield Hall, it is the first time in her life where she is in control of what she does and where she goes. She teaches and is paid her own salary. She does not want to do anything to jeopardize her situation with Mr. Rochester and Adèle. Until, Jane discovers that her feelings towards Mr. Rochester go deeper than just a benevolent employer. Jane cares very deeply for Adèle as well and has her best interests at heart; however, Jane cannot help how she feels and Rochester picks up on it. Likewise, as Maria becomes closer to Captain Von Trapp they begin to fall in love, but also like Jane's story, Captain Von Trapp is engaged to another woman. Being the level headed women they are and keeping their feelings in check is important to them, Jane most especially, they do not intervene. While Jane is respectful to the boundaries of Mr. Rochester, this is her downfall, for she does not put her own happiness first. She lives in Thornfield for months, secretly pining for her employer with never making a move that makes her happy, that is until she returns from visiting her aunt. Finally after many months, Rochester tells Jane that he never loved Miss Ingrahm, his supposed fiancé, and his marriage was all a plot to make Jane jealous. He proposes to Jane and happily she says yes!
